R-22 Replacement: Retrofit vs. Upgrade for my HVAC System
Are you considering an AC replacement due to the R-22 refrigerant phase-out? Many people are unaware of what their options are. We often get calls from Harrisburg, NC, homeowners wondering what to do about HVAC systems that currently use Freon, the brand name for R-22.
For over 40 years, R-22 has been used for residential heat pumps and air-conditioning systems. However, the EPA has issued a Freon phase-out for because it is believed that R-22 contributes to ozone depletion and global warming. By 2020, manufacturers will not be able to produce R-22 to service existing air conditioners and heat pumps. As R-22 is phased out, ozone-friendly refrigerants refrigerants are being introduced.
About R-22 Retrofits
As the Freon phase-out continues, you will need to consider your replacement options. R-22 is becoming more difficult and expensive for HVAC technicians to obtain. An R-22 retrofit may be much cheaper than replacing your entire system. There are a few R-22 retrofit options. Some of the most popular hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) for R-22 retrofits include:
- R-407A: a refrigerant for low to medium temperature refrigeration
- R-407C: the perfect choice for light commercial and residential air conditioner applications.
- R-422D: for residential and light commercial air conditioning applications
- R-410A: also referred to as Puron, is environmentally safe to use as a refrigerant for residential air conditioning applications and light commercial air conditioners
About HVAC Upgrade Options
There are a number of reasons why retrofitting your old HVAC system may not be a viable option. These reasons can range from cost or nonavailability of alternative refrigerants. Defective equipment can also prevent you from retrofitting your HVAC system. If this is the case, then your only option is to upgrade your air conditioning system. Many of the newer AC systems use Puron as the refrigerant of choice because it doesn't deplete the ozone layer or contribute to global warming.
Many homeowners are misinformed about R-22 and how long it will be available. This is why it is important to hire a reputable HVAC company that employs knowledgeable service technicians who are EPA-certified to handle refrigerants. When air conditioning systems use modern refrigerants, it uses approximately 40 percent less energy to heat and cool your home than older systems using refrigerants such as R-22. We take pride in promoting environmental friendliness and helping our customers achieve the highest level of energy efficiency.
